Woman Crush Wednesday with Tam Schallhorn Garrood
Our Woman Crush Wednesday this month is our friend, the beautifully talented Tam, founder of 'Life - vegan and fermented' and creator of the best raw cakes you're going to find in the UK. Nat met Tam whilst studying Nutrition and bonded straight away over their love for making healthy food taste good.... Every weekend Nat would beg Tam to bring her cakes to class. (They pretty much got her through a year of studying!) Tam had just set up her company (formerly known as Je Tam) and her raw treats were in demand! Refined sugar free, gluten free, vegan and raw may not sound very appealing to most, but Tam often uses conventional cakes and sweets as her inspiration...turing them into healthier options. From mince pies, to snickers, Bounty Bars and cheesecake to name but a few. Over the past few years Tam's company has thrived, now know as 'Life - vegan and fermented' branching out to savoury products including burgers, sauerkraut and kombucha.
We love that Tam runs the company with her mum. Their passion, kindness and care is truly seen in their products. Tam's delights can be found in many cafes in Cornwall and can often be found at Vegan festivals around the UK. We can't wait to see her brand all over the UK!
For those who don’t know you, tell us a bit about your business.
Our business, Life-vegan and fermented are passionate about good healthy food that doesn’t just make you feel good it does you good too! All of our cakes, burgers, balls and fermented products are nutrient dense and made from 100% plant based ingredients that are unprocessed free from refined sugar, gluten, palm oil and soy.
What inspired you to start your business?
I was studying nutrition and was fed up with not being able to find products that were suitable for me to eat, everything was laden with sugar, gluten and dairy. I started making things for me to be able to have as a treat and was quickly asked by a local shop to make things for them and its spread from there.
Can you tell us some of the challenges or fears you had about starting a business and how you have over come them?
One of the biggest challenges was 7 months into the business I became pregnant. It was a total shock, we were just starting to gain real momentum and get incredibly popular. The first year after having my daughter I really struggled, my business partner Monika (also my mother) took the helm and I didn’t really have any interest (as to be expected) but it was too much for her to do alone. It’s been hard to get the business/life balance since having Silver but I feel like I’m finally there.
What is your favourite Life - Vegan and Fermented product and why?
My favourite product has to be our Ginger and Turmeric Kombucha, I drink it daily. It’s a great pick me up, fantastic for your digestion and immune system and tastes incredible!
Over the past year you've branched out from raw desserts to producing your own kombucha and sauerkraut. What inspired you to develop these particular products?
Gut health is so important and more is being found out about the importance of it daily. Fermented foods are a really simple, effective way of looking after your digestive system. I’m also German so Sauerkraut runs in my blood.
If you could choose one superfood to keep stocked in your kitchen cupboard what would it be?
I can’t possibly choose just one! My top three are raw cacao, coconut oil and turmeric.
If you could have a super power what would it be?
Flying….. Definitely flying!
Where do you see your business in the next 5 years, what goals would you like to achieve?
We’re just about to launch our online shop in the next month so to expand that side and to be able to send our products out to the whole of the U.K is going to be phenomenal. I’d also like to see our products on the shelves of some bigger health food shops.
Be sure to follow 'Life - Vegan and Fermented' on their Facebook page. We cannot wait to hear more about their online store and we will keep you guys updated on the launch!
